How to Write Accounting Essays

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Accounting as an academic term today goes beyond just a field about numbers – it has acquired other disciplines and constantly absorbing new subjects in it.  Today, accountants need to multitask, such as preparing financial statements and business transactions, and getting involved in mergers and acquisition strategies.
This relevant backdrop gives students numerous topics to discuss when writing accounting essays.

Dissecting Accounting Essays

An accounting essay is an evaluation, explanation and exploration of the multi-faceted field of accounting.  Additionally, this type of paper attempts to analyze problems by applying accounting principles into the problem and the succeeding arguments, systematically.  However, the paper has to be written in a way intended for a large audience, even to those who might not be familiar with the rudiments of accounting.

Structuring

As with all essays, accounting essays follow a structure for a systematic presentation of the question, data and analysis.  Extensive research is necessary to make your paper interesting, organized, and therefore, easy to read.  Create an essay outline where you write your ideas in bulleted form, which makes it easy to infuse data and analysis.

Introduction.

Write your hypothesis in the introduction, and fully describe the issue in question.  Also discuss the scope of the study and the purpose of analysis.  In this section, you can apply accounting principles you will use in the entire paper.

Body

Keep your readers interested in reading your paper by stating your independent thoughts and by looking in-depth at the concepts you have written.  Ideally, you need to sustain your arguments in the body of your text by expounding on what you are being asked to discuss or prove.  When writing, remember not to solely rely on your sources.  Use reading materials only as sources of data and theories, but base your arguments on your own understanding of accounting concepts and principles.

Conclusion

In your conclusion, include a summary of the issue in question and your arguments.  Briefly discuss the flow of the entire essay and your personal interpretation, in general.
